Grandpa

Immaculately dressed at 7.30am, watching my grandpa delicately slice an apple into perfectly even pieces — with the poise and precision of an open-heart surgeon — was art.

It’s difficult to tell a magical story from my Grandpa’s life; because for him every day was magic.

This image of Grandpa at the kitchen table said: “every day is a good day”. His eyes anchored me in the present. His serene smile made your heart bubble with potential and optimism. His timekeeping told me that life is to be treasured. That every moment matters, is meaningful and magnificent. The latter, much like his apple pie addiction.

His smiling eyes put out forest fires. His pithiness gave you purpose. His aura filled the room with calmness. Inspired you to leave somewhere a little bit better than when you found it. To travel. To talk to strangers. To wear your favourite jacket and tie. And to care about how you cut your apples.

My grandpa made everyone realise that their life is magic.

Aren’t we lucky?
