Forget to walk?
It’s funny – walking.
Why do we forget to walk?
Learning to walk is our number one goal at the start of our lives. A monumental marker. Our parents’ hold our trembling hand and watch us like joyful sports’ spectators, clapping and screaming as one foot – and another – start to click. Hang on, I can do this!
Playtime at school sees children gushing outside in a happy hurricane. Walking, running, spinning, dancing, kicking, throwing and giggling in the grass.
Then it becomes okay to be stationary. Dwelling in grey office blocks of dead dreams. Black coffee fills and splashes the rims of mugs; and we sit there twitching like a scream for help. Losing control.
Repetition puts our lives on x2 speed. But our legs stay still. Did you know movement in your mind can be calmed by movement in your body? Neutralised.
Adults pull into the hard shoulder of ‘reality’; deeming walking unimportant on their respawning list of priorities. Meanwhile, our dogs leap for joy as we come downstairs in the morning. Bursting at the inborn itch: to walk. And we grant them that pleasure.
The earth goes round, while why should we sit still? Remember to walk your inner child today.
